چکیده

Thirty strains of human oral anaerobic spirochetes were isolated in three different media: veal heart infusion-ascitic fluid, Spirolate-Brain Heart Infusion-rabbit serum, and supplemented PPLO broth. The morphological and biochemical characteristics of the isolates permitted their differentiation into three distinct species: Trepoifema denticola, T. macrodentium, and T. oralis (proposed new species). These species could be differentiated as follows. Organisms of the T. denticola type had a "2-4-2" axial fibril relationship as determined by electron microscopy, required serum for growth, did not utilize glucose or lactate, and produced indole, ammonia, acetate, and lactate as end products. T. macrodentiwm had a "1-2-1" axial fibril relationship, did not require serum, utilized 1ucose but not lactate, did not produce indole

Incidence and distribution of spirochetes in the digestive tract of dogs.

The spirochetes found in the feces of dogs were divided into three categories based on morphology. These were: borrelias, treponemes, and fairly large double-contoured organisms. Some variation was ob served within each group. Classification or further subdivision was not attempted because definitive characteristics necessary for such a purpose were not available. The live organisms could be re...

Oral Immunization with OspC Does Not Prevent Tick-Borne Borrelia burgdorferi Infection

Oral vaccination strategies are of interest to prevent transmission of Lyme disease as they can be used to deliver vaccines to humans, pets, and to natural wildlife reservoir hosts of Borrelia burgdorferi. We developed a number of oral vaccines based in E. coli expressing recombinant OspC type K, OspB, BBK32 from B. burgdorferi, and Salp25, Salp15 from Ixodes scapularis. Of the five immunogenic...

Utility of Silver Nitrate Staining in Detection of Spirochetes from Oral Cavity of Periodontally Healthy and Diseased Individuals

Background: Oral spirochetes play a definitive role in the etiology of periodontitis. But their study is hampered due to difficulty in cultivating them and molecular methods are expensive. Hence the study explores the possibility of using staining as a screening procedure for the study of oral spirochetes. Experimental approach: The study included 100 patients with chronic periodontitis and 100...

Phylogenetic foundation of spirochetes.

The spirochetes are free-living or host-associated, helical bacteria, some of which are pathogenic to man and animal. Comparisons of 16S rRNA sequences demonstrate that the spirochetes represent a monophyletic phylum within the bacteria. The spirochetes are presently classified in the Class Spirochaetes in the order Spirochetales and are divided into three major phylogenetic groupings, or famil...
